002 The list, by subject

Four things we keep coming back to.

Our catalog gathers around four subjects. Each is a slow argument we return to across several books, rather than a category we invented for the shelf.

  1. i.

    Attention & Focus

Titles on the practice of paying attention in a distracted decade.

  2. ii.

    Habit & Craft

The small architecture of routines that hold up under a real week.

  3. iii.

    Decisions & Direction

Reading for the pivots — career, place, work you actually want to keep.

  4. iv.

    Quiet Productivity

Method without hustle. Notes on doing the work without performing it.

004 From the editorial note

We are not a productivity brand and we are not a self-help imprint. We publish short books — most under 150 pages — on attention, habit, and the ordinary architecture of good days, edited the way books used to be edited: slowly, with a red pencil, and with the assumption that the reader is an adult.

A press, kept small on purpose.

Eleanor Whitfield — Founder & Editor

Former acquisitions editor at a small university press, later a research librarian for a mid-Atlantic public library system. Founded Northoward in 2024 to publish the kind of short, practical books she kept recommending and could not find in print.

006 Reader questions

A few things worth knowing.

Plain answers, in the order readers usually ask them. Anything else, our address is at the foot of the page.

What’s actually inside one of your guides?
A short book. Most run between 60 and 180 pages, set in a serif face, with chapters, a table of contents, a working index at the back, and a brief reading list. No worksheets, no habit trackers, no motivational quotes in colored boxes.
What formats do the guides come in?
Every title ships as both a PDF (formatted for reading on a laptop or printing at home) and an EPUB (for Kindle, Kobo, Apple Books, and other readers). Files are DRM-free. You download them directly after checkout.
Is there a refund window if a title isn’t for me?
Yes. If a guide doesn’t earn its place on your shelf, write to us within thirty days of purchase and we’ll issue a full refund, no questions asked. You can keep the files. Details are on our refund page.
Do you sell to teams, classrooms, or organizations?
We do. Orders of ten copies or more of any single title receive a standing discount, and larger runs can be issued with a printed cover sheet or an internal foreword on request. Write to hello@northoward.com and we’ll take it from there.
Do the guides get updated after I’ve bought them?
When a title is revised — a new edition, a corrected passage, an added afterword — the updated files are sent to every prior reader at no cost. Books, we think, should keep faith with the people who bought them.
